Unusual Table of the Day:

Complete voter registration statistics were published today on the Secretary of State web site for January, 2017.

Rather than month to month changes today I looked at a 6 year window and compared major party growth. I was surprised.

PARTYJanuary 2011January 2017Increase
Democratic860,707976,815116,108
Independent65,093119,39954,306
Republican663,529711,38247,853

Since January, 2011 the Independent Party of Oregon has actually added more members than the Republican Party.

We knew that the IPO was growing at a faster rate than either the Democratic or Republican Parties but now we see that the Independent Party has actually grown faster in total numbers than the GOP. And that’s in spite of the fact that the Oregon GOP added a lot of new members in 2016 because of the Presidential primary while the IPO lost a fair number of members who registered with the Democratic and Republican Parties in order to participate in Oregon’s closed primary election.
