Newberg City Councilor Ryan Howard announced earlier this year that he was running for HD-25 after Rep. Kim Thatcher, who now holds that seat, decided to run for Senate Distrcit 13. Today Howard jumped from the House race and filed for Senate District 13, setting up an eventual contest with Thatcher.
SD-13 has a Republican voter registration edge of 6.3%, while HD-25 has a 9% Republican edge.
In HD-25, Howard’s move leaves Republicans Bill Post and Barbara Jensen seeking the GOP nod for HD-25, and no one running in the Democratic primary. Voter registration breakdown in HD-25 is: 31.9% Democratic, 40.9% Republican, and 27.2% NAV/Independent.
Rumor is, the Independent Party of Oregon may have a candidate to run in HD-25. Setting up a potential Tea Party Republican versus a moderate Independent contest in November. The Republican HD-25 primary contest between Post and Jensen was the reputed cause of Rep. Julie Parrish recently losing her leadership position at an unusual mid session caucus election.
