She could be Governor any day now and comes with her own scandal. Courtesy of Comcast.
Willamette Weekly reports that Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown has cut short her trip to D.C. and is heading back to Oregon. If Governor Kitzhaber were to resign from office, she would be his replacement. Her unexpected return could signal his resignation.
While it hasn’t garnered as much attention in the mainstream press, Secretary Brown has her own scandal brewing. On January 26th, tech and culture website The Verge published a story exposing just cozy relationships politicians and corporations. They analyzed letters elected officials around the country had submitted to the FCC supporting Comcast’s merger with Time Warner. Something that many citizens groups opposed. What The Verge found was that the letters the elected officials submitted were in many cases exactly the same.
Why were letters different politicians from around the country identical, including the one “written” by Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown? Because Comcast wrote them, the politicians just signed their names.
Show me the Money
Comcast made several contributions to Brown’s campaign fundraising committee,$10,000 since 2008. But that is pocket change compared to what Kitzhaber received in the last 12 months. Between January of 2014 and January 2015, Governor Kitzhaber received $36,000. So if she does become the next Governor of Oregon, she can expect a significant increase in Comcast donations. After all, she has already shown a willingness to serve Comcast’s political goals.
